Descriptive Metadata

mDON utilizes the CONTENTdm software to manage its digital collections. In turn CONTENTdm uses Dublin Core as the its standard for descriptive metadata creation. IPFW is using Dublin Core Metadata Best Practices Version 2.1 and Indiana Digital Library Metadata Best Practices for Use of Qualified Dublin Core. mDON metadata schemes are built with the purpose and scope of each collection in mind, especially as it relates to depth of metadata description. The ultimate goal of harvesting mDON metadata for WorldCat is also taken into consideration. Metadata Dictionaries and Guidelines are created for each collection and are available on the mDON site.

Field names are modified as appropriate for each collection, but most fields are mapped to a Dublin Core element. The primary authorities for names and subjects are the Library of Congress Authority file and the Library of Congress Subject Headings. If a name or subject is not found it is created following the Anglo-American Cataloguing Rules (AACR2). In addition other thesauri are used as appropriate such as the Library of Congress Thesaurus for Graphic Materials (TGM I and TGM II) and local sources such as the IPFW Bulletin.

Thesauri used include:

  • IPFW Bulletin
  • Library of Congress Authority File
  • Library of Congress Subject Headings
  • Thesaurus of Graphic Materials: TGM I, Subject Terms
  • Thesaurus of Graphic Materials: TGM II, Genre and Physical Characteristics Terms
  • Worldwide Political Science Abstracts
