mDON Metadata Standards

Metadata is the descriptive cataloging needed to retrieve, access, and manage digital files. Responsible long-term management, and preservation of the digital files produced for mDON depends upon quality metadata. mDON provides three types of metadata:

Descriptive Metadata – Metadata that describes the intellectual content of a resource.

Administrative Metadata – Metadata that includes information about ownership and rights management.

Technical Metadata – Metadata that describes the features of the digital file, such as file type, bit depth and sample rate.

There is no one standard for metadata creation that meets all of the needs of all types of collections, so it is important that each digital collection site document the metadata standards used. This page describes the metadata standards used by IPFW in its mDON collections.
